World Tourism Day 2020 - Tourism & Rural Development
In recognition of World Tourism Day this past Sunday, September 27th, and in line with this year's theme "Tourism & Rural Development", we would like to highlight some of the social enterprises on the Meaningful Travel Map of Jordan, an interactive tool created in partnership with Tourism Cares for travelers and travel providers to connect directly with changemakers on the ground.
Tourism plays a pivotal role in Jordan's economy, and in many local communities it is the only source of income. The people you see in these featured videos are part of the driving force behind Tourism, and whose lives and communities have greatly been impacted by this pandemic. When it is safe to travel again, we hope these images and experiences inspire you to include some or all of these meaningful experiences in your next itinerary.
We look forward to being able to say to you, “Ahlan Wa Sahlan fi al'urdun”, “Welcome to Jordan”.
Crane your head to look up and you’d see an imposing monument carved into the sandstone, supported by six tall pillars etched in intricate designs. This, of course, is the ancient treasury in the city of Petra - and you don’t actually have to be there to experience it. With coronavirus restricting travel, many of the kingdom's key tourist locations are just a click away.
Indeed, just like when it was unveiled by the Ottoman Empire in 1913 as an engineering marvel, the Hejaz Railway today runs on the same tracks winding through Amman and southward into the desert.
The mesmerizing scenes of Jordan’s feathered visitors marking the beginning of the autumn bird migration season, “open up new horizons” for the Kingdom’s wildlife tourism.

At 280 square miles, Wadi Rum is bigger than I expected. Vast. Incredible. Awe-inspiring. A special gift from God. Like no place else I’ve ever been. Spectacular. Period. I’m so glad we stayed one night in a camp (I wish it had been two). A four-hour jeep tour allowed us to see the major sites, but I wanted more. The question is not if you should visit Wadi Rum, but how long can you stay. — Linda, January 2020 - TripAdvisor
We have been in Jordan 7 days on a tour covering the top things: Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead and Red sea,... We had a wonderful time and the guide was outstanding. — Eric, July 2020 - TripAdvisor
