“Visited Jordan this week, so much to see and experience! We visited the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus, Petra and all its fascinations, camels, and the spot where the big boulder comes rolling out of Indiana Jones. So much history there in the ‘Rose City,’ voted one of the 7 new wonders of the world. It takes 3 days to really see it all, we only spent 3 hours. Put it on your must see list if you haven’t already!” — Oprah Winfrey, March 2023
Tourism Rates Witnessed 51.3% Rise During January - July Period: Jordan
The number of visitors to the Kingdom saw a "remarkable" 51.3 per cent rise during the first seven months of 2023, reaching an "unprecedented" total of 3,720,259 tourists, the Tourism Ministry said on Wednesday. In its monthly bulletin, the ministry also noted a 47 per cent increase in the number of overnight tourists during the January-July period, which amounted to 3,085,145 guests, compared with the same period last year, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Kerak Castle: Why You Should Visit the Great Crusader Castle of Jordan
Kerak Castle was once one of the key strongholds of the Crusaders in the region. It was built in the 1140s under Pagan the Butler (who was the lord of Oultrejordain of the Kingdom of Jerusalem). The imposing Crusader castle speaks to the violence and constant conflict that characterized the Crusader states of the period. Kerak is located to the east of the Dead Sea, where it could control the bedouin herders and the trade routes. It is set over 900 meters above sea level (the Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth at 422 meters below sea level).
Ancient Roman Tunnel in Jordan is Believed to be Longest of Antiquity
The Romans were master builders and enjoyed running water in their cities so that they could live what they considered to be a civilized life. Getting the water to the city (often from very far away) would often require them to build massive long aqueducts (one of the most iconic is the Pont du Gard in France). But not all aqueducts were bridges — some had tunnels like the Gadara Aqueduct.
The Gadara Aqueduct had an impressive tunnel section stretching for many miles in Jordan.
Most travelers will be driving to Wadi Rum from Amman and/or Petra and seeing as it’s quite a long drive, you will definitely want to break up the journey. For those interested in the historic biblical locations in Jordan, Mount Nebo is a significant destination. The site is said to be where Moses stood and caught a glimpse of the promised land below. Now home to a chapel that contains ancient mosaics, it is a lovely place to get sweeping views of the Jordanian and Israeli valleys below and see what Moses saw all those centuries ago.
Underground Amman: Exploring Jordan's Little-Known Hip-hop Scene
The neighbourhood of Jabal Amman is like a canvas. On any other day, I would have walked past these mural-covered walls with barely more than a glance. But exploring the meaning behind each piece on a unique hip-hop tour was unlocking a whole new perspective on the city for me. I decided to get a closer look at this off-beat side of the city with the Underground Amman Tour, a two-hour walking tour that takes visitors around some of Amman’s oldest neighbourhoods while highlighting the role of street art in Arab culture.
