2023 Outlook
Greetings!
We are excited about 2023 and are looking forward to welcoming more travelers back to Jordan, allowing Jordanians to do what they do best – providing warm and welcoming hospitality.
The North American market continues to rank as number one for incoming visitors to Jordan and we hope to continue this trend as travel begins to normalize once again.
Here are a few highlights as we jump into 2023:
A Newly Recognized UNESCO Site (launched 2022):As-Salt was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list bringing Jordan’s list of UNESCO sites to six. As-Salt has long been a place of tolerance and urban hospitality. The city’s non-segregated development reflects the community’s tolerance between Muslims and Christians which dates back to the Ottoman period.
Jordan Trail Thru-Hike (Continuously expanding - Spring Thru-Hike - March 10-18, 2023): These annual guided hiking experiences include licensed guides, transportation, meals, accommodations and more.
New Hotels (2022 and coming soon): The Ritz Carlton Hotel opened in Amman in May 2022. The Crowne Plaza Petra Hotel is expected to reopen in 2023 following a 10-year hiatus for renovations, including expansion.
Accolades 2023: Jordan was named one of Lonely Planet's Best Destinations for 2023. Uniquely curated by local experts around the world, Jordan's itinerary was designed to help travelers dream and plan their trip.
Major Productions: The country was recently featured in a multi-Emmy Award-winning reality series, The Amazing Race and a sci-fi series, Dune: Part 2.
Our team is here to partner with you and to help educate travelers and our travel trade partners on the many experiences available across Jordan, and to provide you with all the information you need to showcase Jordan as a desirable place to visit. In the meantime, stay tuned for continued travel updates and developments.
We look forward to saying "Hala hala" and "Ahlan wa sahlan fi al Urdun", welcome to Jordan!
Jordan's Umm Qais Among World's 'Best Tourism Villages'
Umm Qais has been selected as one of the world's "Best Tourism Villlages" in 2022 by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). The Best Tourism Villages project aims to promote and enhance the role of tourism in safeguarding rural villages, along with their landscapes, natural and cultural diversity, knowledge systems, and local values and activities, including gastronomy.
Biblical and oral local traditions claim that Moses walked across Jordan from the Red Sea in the south all the way north to Mount Nebo as he wandered through the Holy Land. In fact, all of Jordan is brimming with ancient references to Moses and his brother, Aaron. Take, for example, the name of the closest city to the ancient Petra –Wadi Musa, “Moses’ Valley.”
Work ongoing to make trail tourism accessible for people with disabilities
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is in the process of identifying and renovating trails that are accessible for people with disabilities, according to Al Mamlaka TV. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities conducted studies assessing trail tourism activities, which fall within the ministry’s “adventure tourism framework”.
Visiting One of the Few Remaining Sand Artists of Jordan
Petra, Jordan has always been associated with one of my favorite memories. In 1989, I saw Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in the theaters with my mother when it was first released. The movie let us travel alongside Jones (famously played by Harrison Ford) as he rode his horse through rough hills and narrow canyons, and past the Treasury and Great Temple.
If you’re traveling through Jordan as a tourist, chances are you will be spending a lot of time on the road. Thankfully, Jordan has a network of excellent roadside restaurants that can break up a long highway journey and offer a satisfying dining experience. After leaving the Dead Sea, we headed down to Petra, a journey of about three hours. We left in the late afternoon and our driver got hungry before we reached Petra, so he pulled into a gas station and ordered us out of the car. There was a large and bustling restaurant inside. I’m not sure who was working for who at that point, but I was glad to try some roadside mansaf, this mansaf was wrapped in a warm lavash to keep the lamb and saffron rice warm. On the side, I enjoyed some pickled cucumbers and a shirazai salad.
